After 8 years, Shelley Corteville has stepped down as director of Egan Warming Center, a network of sites where homeless people can keep warm when temps fall below freezing. Now, the advocate plans to focus on helping unaccompanied youth.
Corteville says her resignation comes just before the center undergoes changes. She adds someone else might be better suited to fill her position. Corteville says her proudest accomplishment as director was fostering an environment where anyone who stepped through the door felt equal.
Throughout her career, she says she’s noticed there aren’t a lot of resources for homeless kids under eighteen.
CORTEVILLE: “I just first need to figure out what’s going on, what’s happening, what’s not happening, what’s needed. And what can I do to help get our kids off the street.”
Corteville says as part of that effort, she’ll reach out to organizations like CAHOOTs, Whitebird, 15th Night and Hosea Youth Services.
