Snow Forecast For Eugene, Cascades For Thanksgiving Week

Rachael McDonald

The forecast is calling for snow in the South Willamette Valley this week.

The storm late Tuesday is expected to bring even more snow for the mountains. David Bishop is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland. He says to expect the heaviest snowfall Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

“Right now, we have in the forecast, about, say, 1 to 2 inches in Eugene.” Bishop says, “Now, as you start moving into the foothills of either the coastal range or the cascades, obviously, that amount will increase as you kind of increase with elevation.”

Bishop says the coast range may get 2-4 inches. In the cascades, Willamette Pass could get more than a foot of snow this week. Just in time for Thanksgiving travel. Bishop advises those heading into the mountains, especially the Cascades and south to Siskiyou pass to carry traction devises, an emergency kit and check road conditions.

“Give yourself plenty of time to travel and avoid traveling during when the heavy stuff is going to be coming in.” Bishop says, “Because if you can minimize your impacts, or minimize your risks, that’ll help you out.”

It’s unclear how much the snow will stick around, especially in lower elevations. But, temperatures are supposed to stay cold for the rest of this week, with overnight lows around 20 for Eugene.
