Tokyo Olympics Postponement Would Affect Eugene, Region

Karen Richards

Dick Pound, a Canadian member of the International Olympic Committee told NPR Monday he thinks the Tokyo Games will be postponed due to Covid-19 concerns, likely until 2021. Pound said the committee will take four weeks to work through the details, some of which impact Eugene and the region.

Hayward Field was set to host the Olympic trials June 19th to 28th and the World Track and Field Championships in August, 2021.

Possible outcomes of an IOC decision include canceling this year’s trials and rescheduling Oregon’s World Champs. Traditionally odd-yeared, the next World Athletics Championship is scheduled for 2023 in Budapest. A TrackTown USA representative says they have no comment at this time.

If the Olympics are delayed, it will be a first. The games have been canceled during war time, but never postponed.
