Lane County Commissioners voted Tuesday to provide land for a Housing First project in Eugene. It will be housing for people who are chronically homeless.
The Housing First model has been successful in other cities, including Portland and Seattle. Jacob Fox is with Homes for Good, the non-profit that’s spearheading the project.
“The idea is that it’s low barrier and we’re bringing people in with really no questions asked and then surrounding them with supportive services to help them heal as individuals, both physically and mentally.”
Fox says they recently received a state grant of $3 million to help fund the building but they still need to secure more money. The 50-unit complex will be built on a parcel near the Lane County Behavioral Health facility across from Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
