Lane County’s public housing authority, Homes for Good, has announced the Section 8 Wait List for rental assistance vouchers will soon re-open. It’s the first time in two years. KLCC’s Tiffany Eckert reports.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development or HUD has allocated $17.4 million dollars to be spent for low-income housing in Lane County. This is expected to impact over 2,800 individuals and families.
Beth Ochs is Rent Assistance Division Director with Homes for Good. She says the tight housing market, particularly in Eugene, pushed the agency to consider something new: shared housing.
“We made a change to our administrative plan and now you can use a Section 8 voucher in a roommate situation,” says Ochs. “So that expands the housing stock in our community for families with Section 8 vouchers.”
Homes for Good has also implemented two unique programs. The Housing Liaison helps with hands-on rental navigation services. And a Landlord Liaison educates property managers regarding rights and responsibilities.
The Section 8 Wait List will be open from November 12th through November 19th.
