Springfield School District’s top administrator is negotiating his departure from the job after months of turmoil with board members, and criticism from the community.

Springfield Public Schools' Board Chair Heather Quaas-Annsa has resigned, citing board dysfunction and concern for her family’s safety.

Two top Springfield school administrators intend to sue the district, alleging whistleblower retaliation, defamation and unlawful employment practices.

Eugene 4J School District leaders released the last phase of budget reductions this week. The new round of proposed cuts could eliminate 110 classroom teachers and support staff. District leaders say they need to reduce the budget by about $30 million total.

The district will layoff 27 employees and eliminate some vacant positions. Those cuts will impact school schedules and cause some employees to change buildings according to the district, and cause other staffing changes visible to students.

The proposal includes scaling back summer school, college readiness and some online programs as well as cuts to classified, licensed and administrative jobs to help close a $30 million gap.

Eugene 4J must close a $30 million budget gap caused by declining enrollment and rising costs. Superintendent Miriam Mickelson said she’s hoping making those big reductions this year will save families and staff from big cuts in future years.
