In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, the Asian Night Market offers an immersive experience featuring diverse of cultural performances and demonstrations, savory and sweet Asian street foods, youth activities, and an artisan's marketplace. Performances like Japanese Taiko drumming, Chinese lion dancing, Hawaiian hula to K-pop highlight the event’s cultural richness. Attendees can savor authentic Asian street food such as Pad Thai, Korean BBQ and more. Unique activities include hands-on workshops in calligraphy, origami, and lantern making. The vibrant marketplace offers handcrafted goods, art, and traditional clothing, making the event a true celebration of Asian culture. Bring your family and friends for a fun Friday evening. Join drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni and his ensemble for a dynamic evening of original compositions, jazz standards, and unique explorations. Mastrogiovanni, an Oregon-based musician with a rich background influenced by J-pop, ska, and avant-garde jazz, brings a fresh, modern voice to the drums. He’ll be joined by trumpet virtuoso Noah Simpson, pianist Keith L. Brown, and bassist Garrett Baxter, all renowned for their distinct approaches to contemporary jazz. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

DREPUNG GOMANG SACRED ARTS TOUR

Eight monks from Drepung Gomang Monastery will create a sand mandala in Eugene. The ritual is dedicated to the long life of HH the Dalai Lama, world peace, and the benefit of all sentient beings.

The monks will be in Eugene from May 21 - 25, 2025. The mandala will be constructed at 1685 W. 13th Ave., the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene. The building is open from 10 am to 3 pm Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm Sunday, and will be open special hours Friday and Saturday for this event.

Public attendance is encouraged.
Admission is free.
Donations to cover the expenses of the monks and their travel are greatly appreciated.

The opening ceremony will be Wednesday morning, May 21.
The next three days the monks will be constructing and chanting, and your attendance is appreciated.
Sunday morning there will be a viewing of the completed mandala. The closing ceremony will also be Sunday, including chanting, deconstruction of the mandala, and sharing the blessed sand.

Two veteran Oregon photographers--Gary Tepfer of Eugene and Rich Bergeman of Corvallis--are teaming up for an exhibit at White Lotus Gallery featuring color and black-and-white photographs of arid territories from Oregon's High Desert to Asia's Altai Mountains.

Both photographers, working independently, have been exploring desert environments for decades, and while they share a love for the spare elegance of the land, their interpretation of that land offers viewers some engaging contrasts.

Tepfer is known for his striking color images from the American Southwest, Eastern Oregon and the steppes of Mongolia and Siberia, regions he has visited many times over the past four decades. “I want to capture that aspect of the natural world that stands apart from human existence,” Tepfer says. “But the locations to which I am drawn are often the same places that are the most rich in the ritual artifacts of ancient peoples.”

Bergeman, on the other hand, is a black-and-white photographer whose most recent work has focused on that portion of the Great Basin that lies within Oregon, especially remnants of the paleolakes that dot the region.

“I've always wondered about all those 'lakes' I'd see marked on maps that didn't really exist as bodies of water,” he says. “A little research taught me they were footprints of the great inland seas that once covered the area 10,000 years ago. Intrigued, I began to search for them and find ways to dramatize this curious evidence of the past.”

Both photographers have work in several private and public collections and over the years have been published in books and periodicals.

Photography at Oregon’s 47th Annual Exhibit and Auction is nearly upon us! We’ve already received an impressive collection of print donations from noted photographers locally and nationally. So far, contributions include prints from artists such as Christopher Burkett, Christopher Landis, Ken Hawkins and Brian Lanker, as well as outstanding works from many exceptional local and regional artists, such as Michael Z. Taylor, Barbora Bakalarova, Sarah Grew, Walt O’Brien, and Doremus Scudder, just to name a very few.

As in years past, there will be three Auction Exhibits featuring prints from the Online Auction at Dot Dotson's Gallery in Eugene, one each in May, June and July. This year, the online auction and the three exhibits will run concurrently.
