Do you want to make the most of your food purchasing power? Freezing the extra food from Oregon’s bounty can be easy and rewarding. Come join a “hands-on” workshop taught by OSU Extension Master Food Preserver volunteers. The workshop will be on Thursday, May 29, at the OSU Extension/Deschutes County office at the Fairgrounds in Redmond, 9:00 AM to Noon. The workshop fee is $15.00.

We’ll be using recipes from OSU Extension’s Freezing Fruits and Vegetables and Freezing Convenience Foods. Learn about equipment, supplies, and preparation tips for making best-quality frozen food products. The registration fee includes samples, products made in the class and Oregon State University Extension “how-to” booklets. Workshop size is limited.

Two veteran Oregon photographers--Gary Tepfer of Eugene and Rich Bergeman of Corvallis--are teaming up for an exhibit at White Lotus Gallery featuring color and black-and-white photographs of arid territories from Oregon's High Desert to Asia's Altai Mountains.

Both photographers, working independently, have been exploring desert environments for decades, and while they share a love for the spare elegance of the land, their interpretation of that land offers viewers some engaging contrasts.

Tepfer is known for his striking color images from the American Southwest, Eastern Oregon and the steppes of Mongolia and Siberia, regions he has visited many times over the past four decades. “I want to capture that aspect of the natural world that stands apart from human existence,” Tepfer says. “But the locations to which I am drawn are often the same places that are the most rich in the ritual artifacts of ancient peoples.”

Bergeman, on the other hand, is a black-and-white photographer whose most recent work has focused on that portion of the Great Basin that lies within Oregon, especially remnants of the paleolakes that dot the region.

“I've always wondered about all those 'lakes' I'd see marked on maps that didn't really exist as bodies of water,” he says. “A little research taught me they were footprints of the great inland seas that once covered the area 10,000 years ago. Intrigued, I began to search for them and find ways to dramatize this curious evidence of the past.”

Both photographers have work in several private and public collections and over the years have been published in books and periodicals.

Photography at Oregon’s 47th Annual Exhibit and Auction is nearly upon us! We’ve already received an impressive collection of print donations from noted photographers locally and nationally. So far, contributions include prints from artists such as Christopher Burkett, Christopher Landis, Ken Hawkins and Brian Lanker, as well as outstanding works from many exceptional local and regional artists, such as Michael Z. Taylor, Barbora Bakalarova, Sarah Grew, Walt O’Brien, and Doremus Scudder, just to name a very few.

As in years past, there will be three Auction Exhibits featuring prints from the Online Auction at Dot Dotson's Gallery in Eugene, one each in May, June and July. This year, the online auction and the three exhibits will run concurrently. You can view a select number of photographs at Dot Dotson's each month and view and bid on the entire selection of over 85 photographs online at auctria.events/PAO2025.

There will be an Opening Reception from 5-6 p.m., complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres. We hope to see you there.

The exhibit will run all of May, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.

The Online Auction itself will be open for bids starting May 1st and continuing through July 31st. The entire selection of photographs will be online.

We are looking forward to an active turnout for the 2025 Auction! Remember, that all auction proceeds go toward promoting and sponsoring photography exhibits and events by PAO, as they have for the past 45 years. Our success is directly due to the generosity of many fine photographers donating work, giving back to the medium we all love, as well as the generosity and commitment of our bidders.

This is a space where queer and trans people with disabilities can share their day to day frustrations, discuss chosen topics, and share resources and validation. Open to all LGBTQIA people, including trans, nonbinary, questioning, and gender-diverse folks, ages 13+. FREE.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box.

Trumpeter, composer, and 2011 NEA Jazz Master Wynton Marsalis performs his live score to accompany a screening of director Dan Pritzker's 2010 silent Louis Armstrong biographical film Louis, joined by classical pianist Cecile Licad and an all-star 11-piece jazz ensemble in The Shedd Institute's intimate, vibrant Jaqua Concert Hall.

Shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond as a modern re-imagining of early silent film, Louis is an homage to Louis Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin, beautiful women and the birth of American music. The grand Storyville bordellos, alleys and cemeteries of 1907 New Orleans provide a backdrop of lust, blood and magic for 6 year old Louis as he navigates the colorful intricacies of life in the city. Young Louis’s dreams of playing the trumpet are interrupted by a chance meeting with a beautiful and vulnerable girl named Grace and her baby, Jasmine.

“The idea of accompanying a silent film telling a mythical tale of a young Louis Armstrong was appealing to me,” says Marsalis. “Of course, calling it a silent film is a misnomer — there will be plenty of music, and jazz is like a conversation between the players so there’ll be no shortage of dialogue. I look forward to playing with Cecile. The contrast between Gottschalk’s music and jazz can be a revelation.” Notes Pritzker. “The combination of Cecile playing Gottschalk and Wynton and his ensemble playing jazz reflects the wide-ranging nature of the American musical landscape.”

“‘Louis’ came about when I was writing a screenplay about Buddy Bolden, the first jazz trumpeter of New Orleans, and I took my mom to see Chaplin’s City Lights with the Chicago Symphony performing the score. It was without a doubt the best movie experience I ever had. The challenge of trying to tell a story visually, without dialogue, was compelling. I thought that if I was going to shoot one film, I might as well try to shoot two—the second being a silent film that picked up where Bolden ended. And it put Vilmos and me on even footing—he’d never made a silent film before either.”

From his New Orleans beginnings and fiery debut with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to his string of acclaimed albums and current role as Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Marsalis has become an iconic figure in the art form. He has amassed nine GRAMMYs and the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first ever awarded to a jazz artist.

Manila-born virtuoso classical pianist Cecile Licad made her debut at age seven as soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Philippines, and at 20 was one of the youngest musicians to receive the prestigious Leventritt Gold Medal.
